South Africa Findings of a Survey – IRI Poll

Report | November 1, 1994 | 82 pages

This survey report examines national sentiments following President Nelson Mandela’s historic inauguration in 1994. Conducted by the International Republican Institute in cooperation with the Institute for Multi-Party Democracy, this survey reflects the expectations, priorities, and general mood of the 35 million inhabitants. While predictions from public figures and policy experts pointed to political turmoil and social unrest, the report found that the population appears to have adjusted their expectations and to have taken into consideration practical constraints. Polling on social issues, economic policy, and politics show that despite continued economic and social disparity, the population is still patient and hopeful following its democratic transformation.
